Peyton's Entrance into the World

I know it's be awhile since posting, but being huge and pregnant makes motivation pretty much non-existent. July was fun, we had a good time, I was huge; miserable; and no fun to be around. There, all caught up.

So, I was due July 30th. Since Aidan was 11 days early and 8+ pounds, everyone- including my doctor- thought I would go very early. 38 weeks passed with no movement, then came and went 39 weeks and before we knew it- it was our due date. We went about our business all weekend and no baby.

Monday, August 1st, we went to the hospital for a non-stress test and Biophysical Ultrasound. The ultrasound went well- we passed but my fluid was a little low. We also passed our non-stress test with flying colors. So, they just told me to drink more water and sent us on our way. So, we were 40 weeks 2 days and still very pregnant.

Overnight I started having a lot of cramping and back pain- which was somewhat normal for this point in pregnancy, so I kind of ignored it and just tried to sleep. I woke up Tuesday morning (August 2nd) with some bloody show. There were no contractions yet- so I went about my day.

10 am- Contractions started and were between 10 and 30 min apart and were lasting 20-40 seconds. I figured I could sit here all day and time them or I could get some stuff done. So, I dropped Aidan off with Uncle Jeff and went and got a manicure and pedicure and ran to the bank and picked up Aidan's uniform shirts. The contractions continued through the errands but really never picked up.

3pm- Aidan and I get home from all the errands and contractions decide to pick up. They are 5-10 min apart and about 40 sec. long. They are super inconsistent. I would have a 5 min break, then a 7 min break, then a 12 min break, then a 5 min break, etc. Also, they weren't very painful- they felt like period cramps and were not in my back.

4pm- Nick called and asked me to run to the post office for him and I told him I was not driving anywhere- he decided to come home. Contractions still have not changed. I am trying not to get excited and don't want to sound a false alarm.

Contractions continue to be inconsistent and not very painful. I never had one that lasted more than 1 min and most of them were 40 seconds-ish.

8:40pm- Nick and I decide that we are going to drop off Aidan and head to the hospital- knowing that we might get sent home since labor isn't very consistent and I am not in very much pain. We decide we will leave when the show we are watching is over at 9.

9pm- Show is over. I give Nick a list of things to throw in the car and I run to the bathroom. I have a horrible contraction on the toilet and feel the urge to push. SHOOT. I come out of the bathroom and look at Nick and say, "WE WAITED TOO LONG!" Then yelled at him because he was taking too much time to get ready. We threw everything in the car and were on the road by 9:10.

9:12pm- We are still in the neighborhood and my water breaks- it is gushing all over. Luckily I had grabbed a towel to sit on.

9:14pm- I look at Nick and say, "I am pushing."

Nick says, "Well don't"

Me, "I'm not trying too- my body is just doing it!"

The rest of the time table is pretty much a blur- but I'll reconstruct to the best of my ability. We pull in front of the driveway at my parents house- and Aidan jumps out with his bags and my mom was out there to meet him. We hit every stoplight from there to the hospital. All the while, I was pushing involuntarily and holding my body up so I could hoover above the seat.

Somewhere around 9:40pm- we get to the hospital and I have a contraction (again which my body is pushing through) in the parking lot. Nick asked if I was okay as I doubled over a car with a contraction. I looked at him and said, "I'll just walk and push- lets go!"

We get inside and get to the elevator. While riding up to L & D I have another contraction and I was on my hands and knees in the elevator while my body was trying to push the baby out. I feel the ring of fire. (crap.)

We get out of the elevator and the nurses meet us. We skip triage and go right to a labor room. I get another contraction while we walk into the room. I reach down and look at the nurse and say, "Her head is right here." They lay me on the floor, take my underwear off and a bunch of people run into the room. (all while my body is still trying to push this baby out.)

Between the first contraction and the second the nurses and Nick pick me up and move me to the bed. The ER doc runs in and is getting gloves and the nurses are telling me to blow through the contractions. (yeah, my body was still pushing on it's own.) Out pops my little girl. I know the cord was around her neck- but it wasn't an issue. I ask, "Is she still a girl?" (she was)

They put her on my chest and Nick cut the cord. They warmed her up and took her over to get her vitals (Nick went with.) She had Apgar's of 9/9. Our little girl was born at 9:45 (less then 5 min after we got to the hospital) and was 7 pounds 4 ounces. She was 19 inches long.

I had a small tear (1st degree) and we waited for my doctor to come and take care of that and make sure everything was good. Peyton latched on right away and breast fed and they cleaned up the room and let us bond. Later they came to take us to our post-parnum room. I was super light-headed and dizzy and Peyton was having problems regulating her temp- so she went to the nursery to chill in the warmer. Her and I were both fine by morning. She is a really easy baby so far!

  1. She looks like Aiden to me in the top pic but OMG Nicki! Way to breathe through the contractions and what a turn of events! As crazy as it sounds I've heard of birth stories like this before, where early labor last soooooo long and then BAM! Transition and baby in like 20 minutes. Congratulations though! She looks absolutely perfect :).
